The Good Neighbor Initiative – A Chance to Serve Refugees

[25] And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” [26] He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” [27] And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” [28] And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”[29] But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” (Luke 10:25-29, ESV)

Jesus answers this question with one of the greatest stories ever told, the Parable of the Good Samaritan.  The basic meaning of the story is that your neighbor is anyone who has a deep need that you can meet.  Right now as you are reading, St Louis has many refugee families that are moving into our area.  These families have left war-torn regions and suffered greatly.  We can be their neighbor and love them in the Gospel.  What better application is there for the month when we remember love.  The Good Neighbor Initiative is a program of the Saint Louis Metro Baptist Association and  churches of the Oasis International Church Network.   When members in good standing of those churches  have applied and been selected, they are invited to the training and will eventually be matched with a neighbor new to St. Louis they can befriend.  You can become involved with The Good Neighbor Initiative as an individual or as a family!  It doesn’t take much to be a friend!  You can do this!  You can sign up to be a part of The Good Neighbor as an individual, a family, group of friends or a Community Group.
