In the sermon this morning I will be discussing the connection between the Old Testament covenant name for God (Yahweh or Jehovah) and Jesus’ statements throughout John where He identifies Himself as “I AM”. I will be sharing that the Old Testament uses the name in the same way as Jesus in the New Testament, as God shows Himself to be all that His people need. Here are the Jehovah names from the Old Testament story followed by the “I AM” statements by Jesus in John’s Gospel.
The covenant names of God
• Jehovah Jireh – The LORD our Provider (Genesis 22)
• Jehovah Rophe – The LORD our Healer (Exodus 15:26)
• Jehovah Nissi – The LORD our Banner (Exodus 17:15)
• Jehovah M’Kaddesh – The LORD our Sanctifier (Leviticus 20:8)
• Jehovah Shalom – The LORD our Peace (Judges 6:24)
• Jehovah Rohi – The LORD our Shepherd (Psalm 23:1)
• Jehovah Tsidkenu – the LORD our Righeousness (Jeremiah 33:15-16)
• Jehovah Shammah – The Lord is Present (Ezekiel 48:35)
